Memorizing time tables- this is one of the oldest methods to learn mental maths. It helps one to make simple multiplication problems. Although it is an effective process it has limitations especially when one is dealing with big numbers. This is because most tables deal with two digit numbers thus one cannot be able to multiply numbers that have three digits or more. This is a disadvantage especially in some countries like India, where students are discouraged from using gadgets like calculators in the exam rooms.
One of the formal methods of learning maths is by using Abacus mental maths. This method traces its roots to Asia. This teaches students to practice basic calculations like subtraction, division addition and multiplication. Here you are able to deal with big numbers where you can perform calculations on long and large numbers. You can also be able to come up with square roots and squares of some problems. The latter however depends on the division or multiplication. This is taught using old century tools known as Abacus.
Another method used is known as verdict mental maths. Teachers use old scriptures that were used in India to teach the subject. No tools are used to teach the subject. This is a more advanced mode of learning as you not only learn the simple calculations but you also learn complex maths like geometry, statistics and algebra. This helps one to solve complex and advanced problems with ease. This should be taught at an early age so that the children can use them in future without any problem. Studying should be done in a quiet area, be it in the library or their room with no music or television noises. This will greatly help with concentration. Math problems should always be done with a pencil or erasable pen, never a regular pen. Mistakes happen, and they should be able to fix those mistakes. Failure to use an appropriate writing utensil will only lead to messy paper and lots of frustration.
The parents of the student must make sure that their child has the elementary school basics of math down before entering middle school. If they aren't confident about math, their grades will suffer as a result, and they may just want to give up.
If the student doesn't understand something, they should go to a teacher or adult they trust for help. Ignoring the parts they don't understand can only lead to trouble.
Knowing these simple survival tips for middle school math could never hurt anything or anyone, and the student will only find satisfaction in what they can do.

Games do and can work, but beware:
There's an awful lot on the web, but many are low-budget and you don't want your students to perceive math as cheap.
Before we get started, it's helpful to know how math games are constructed and how they function.
Most math games simply add an animation to a math problem in a way that the two are unrelated. A horse jumps because two numbers were added correctly.
There a lots of this type, and the approach does seem to work for training multiplication tables or other basic functions. Timez Attack sets the stage for having created fascinating 3D worlds and a cute little frog for its character that seems as appealing to girls as boys.
Using conceptually disintegrated games for teaching more complex concepts may have some undesirable effects, and may cause a disconnect between the math concept and its meaning.
For deeper concepts, occasionally a game will pop up where the math concept is used in a context where the visuals makes sense. The author(s) of Math Playground, the #1 of the free web-based sites that have multiple games, have put a lot of thought into their work... where the animations frequently match the concept. Lure of the Labyrinth is a blend between the two approaches, and worth a visit for the interesting game design.
Math Snacks, put out by New Mexico State University, aren't really games, but rather videos you watch. But they are really funny, and they really work, teaching basic concepts such as ratios through exceptionally well written animated "shorts".
To take your students even deeper, look for "story-based math games" where the math concept, story and animation are all seamlessly integrated.

Find a spot where your child is comfortable. It is trite to say that children should study somewhere quiet, but that may not always be the best idea. Silence often leads to daydreaming. I have had many students (myself included) who work well with noise; in fact, they can tune out distractions and focus better on their work.
Some children feel uncomfortable in solitude. They would rather be at the kitchen table, or in the living room. You know your child best. Mastering Basic Facts
Since math is cumulative, it is important that your child reviews basic math facts before attempting difficult math concepts and skills for homework.
Short Study Time
Math homework can often be tedious and detail oriented. In a short amount of time, your child might become overwhelmed with formulae, different math operations, and a whole slew of numbers, shapes, and graphs. It is commonly understood that most children can study for about 10 minutes at a time before losing focus. This applies to math homework as well.
Ultimately, you will want your child to review math skills and complete math homework in shorter time frames but with more frequency. For example, your child could do some math work for ten minutes, take a two minute break, do some other work, and then come back to math for ten minutes. Rinse and repeat.
Make Math Real
The best way to help your child with math homework is to provide real-life examples. That is, show your child how his or her math homework applies to real life. For example, when learning about fractions, have your child help measuring ingredients when cooking. Or, when helping your child learn about volume, use a measuring cup to find the volume of different containers around the home. If your child is learning about data management and graphing, point out real-life graphs in magazines and in the newspaper. This will show your child that math has real-life applications and it will get your child more interested in his or her homework.

Fun means different things to different people. Making math more fun (or any other subject), happens when a variety of different activities are incorporated directly into daily lessons. Making learning extra fun happens when the teacher has fun in their teaching. Making a class fun does not mean make one day a special fun day. Children do not need a whole lot to create fun, something adults often forget with the mounds of toys and activities we provide for them.
Fun can be music. Use a favorite tune to sing the multiplication tables. Allow soft music with no words to play in the background while working,
Fun can be color. Make flashcards on colored 3x5 cards, student learn to hilite the directions in green and the answers in orange. Use colored pencil to do the math! Middle schoolers enjoy this as much as the younger ones!

Fun can be pictures. Draw a picture to illustrate a problem or set of problems. Students can find pictures in magazine that illustrate some of their homework problems, or write a math problem of their own based on a picture they find.
Fun can be construction. Use interconnecting building blocks as rewards for correct answers. The color and shape and size can be determined by attributes in each answer. The older they are the more challenging the attributes are, again middle schoolers love to play with building blocks.
Fun can be throwing. A simple soft ball or bean bag can be used in oral drill, throw it back and forth to the student , teacher asks and throws, student answers and throws back.
Fun can be talking with your hands. Design hand signals for math vocabulary or steps to a process to help memory. Creating a mantra or a chant to recite them each day makes math more fun!
Fun can be manipulating. Many schools use fraction tiles, or attribute blocks. Post it notes with numbers can be used to do problems on the desk. They can be color coded them by place value!
Fun can be an unusual medium. There are special dry erase markers that will write on windows! Giant pencils, pencils that are straws, can be the simple thing that make the lesson enjoyable
Fun can be interesting creative games. Games of all shapes and sizes can be used in the classroom and still be part of the daily lesson! Pencil and paper games, challenging board games, large full classroom games where students get up and move around or even outdoor activities all have adaptations available to use to making learning math extra fun.
These ideas illustrate that creating a fun atmosphere for math classes can be simple but effective. It is important that the teacher incorporate these activities directly into lessons and not as a separate special activity or game time. This creates a positive attitude towards the class as a whole and eliminates the students pestering with, "Can we play a game today?" Eventually making math learning extra fun will become second nature, incorporating the techniques as a matter of routine to classes of all ages.
